Getting Started

So, well, finally I found a flat and moved in. Flat's actually quite nice and bigger than my old one at the halls of residence. The only problem is that it is still a bit cold since the heaters are not working properly but I hope I can have this fixed as well before winter is coming.

My work at law school is quite interesting: I will have to give a tute for freshmen in Civil Law and will have to provide all sort of information for the new students. Fortunately, you can tell them little buggers anything as they have no clue at all. In their eyes one is always right. (Which you are, off course...)

My new boss, who is also my advisor for my PhD, is probably the friendliest professor I ever met (at leat so far...) and I think as long as I do not completely mess up, we should get along quite well.

As everywhere, there is always one stupid person in every department and in my case it is another colleague who started with me. First thing he did on his first day was to tell me that he already had 11 pages of his thesis - I had not even a topic for mine at this point. Well, that caused a first attack of panic but having fought that down, I guess this means war...

...Which brings me to my next topic: today after 2 weeks of preparation I actually wrote the first sentences of my thesis and I am going to celebrate it tomorrow. (All hail the king!!!)
My "dear" colleague will then come back on Monday and after having rested my index-finger on the enter key for about 5 seconds, I can now, without telling a lie, tell him that I have already 20 pages after only 4 days. That should cause enough panic for him to shut him up for a while.

So, that's it, so far. I am going to try to write on a more regular basis. Cheers!

Trying to find a flat....

After 1 week of basically helping my family to get started with their (!) holidays and to get all the stuff done that is connected with the new job (New insurance, insurance and ... yes ... insurance...), I am finally back in Passau to find a f***** flat for myown.
It's amazing what some people define as a 'flat' - sometimes I feel as if I am supposed to be grateful that these dumps have a roof. Ok, I have to admit that it is impossible to find a flat for the price I paid before at the halls of residence. But, since I am going to earn some money, I am ready to put in some more money, and I am sure that it is possible to find something worth the money. At least a room, where I stuff in a desk, a bed and some shelves. That is the theory...
In reality, even some 'useless' stuff, like phone or internet access, seems to be scifi because most of the flats I have seen so far do not even have the technical facilities to connect to those 'magic' services. ("Oh, no, there is no landline in this room! Nobody uses a phone around here...")

Ok, enough whining, back to work! (I have to discuss a topic for my thesis tomorrow with my Professor! So, where is the topic....)

Next Step!

I just finished the next step towards my new job at university!
After 5 and a half long and hard years at law school (one of those years being a not so hard year of studying and partying abroad in Australia, though) I finally graduated last week!

First of all, this doesn't mean I can start running around being some sort of a lawyer! In Germany, you have to do two more years of articles followed by an even harder second state examination consisting of 11 (!) 5-hour written tests within 3 weeks and one oral exam. (Just to compare it with the first state examination I just did this spring: 8 5-hour written tests within 2 weeks and one oral exam...) Since I am not so keen on working my ass off again learning for those crappy exams, I decided to do a PhD first. This means I will work my ass off (hmm, deja-vu...) writing my thesis and doing some work for a professor like for example torturing fresh students holding tutorials and stuff. At least I'll get paid quite well! I already have the job starting on Octobre 1st, but not yet an idea for my thesis. Well, I will work on that!

So, today I will go home for holidays, guarding my parents' house while they are somewhere on a beach. These are my first free weeks since February 2005! This means I won't post too much during the next 6 weeks. (Can't post drinking...) After that there will be a lot of stuff to do like finding a new flat etc. Hence, I guess there will be a lot to write about!

Finally, I am the proud owner of this fine piece of virtual real estate! Hopefully it is not built on an ancient Indian cemetary!
I will post some funny or not so funny stuff on a regular basis here - probably, if there's time! Feel free to comment on it, but please behave! No racism, idiotism, stupiditism, no-idea-but-commenting-anyway-ism, flaming, spamming, telling bad lawyer jokes or telling no lawyer jokes at all. (And some other things I will have to make up as we go!)
You may use any language that I can understand, that is at the moment only German, English, Latin, Ancient Greek and French.
Ugh, and: Please excuse my bad English! (Just imagine a strong German accent, well known from some war movies!)
